About me - Andrea Santos

About me

When I turned 11 years old, I was given an assignment by my English teacher: I had to keep a journal for a month. Every day I had to write an entry and show it to her. She would check it, correct the grammar, spelling and give it back. At first it proved to be a very tough task, some days I didn't know what to write about and found the silliest topics in the world. Some other days, I couldn't fit everything I wanted to say in just one notebook page. By the end of that month I didn't want to stop writing and I also had the urge to write about deeper things that I didn't particularly want my English teacher to read about. That's how my writing vocation started. Over the years, my journal has developed and changed form (of course, it became electronic!) but I still write almost every day.

While it is possible that I was born with some of my restless and adventurous spirit, I mostly blame three of the greatest influences on me to become who I am.

Initially my family is to blame; first because they developed (and financed) my traveling urge to a great extent since my early days. The second reason is that my parents foresaw the importance of a school teaching me English at the same time as Spanish. Learning English has proved to be the wings that have taken me wherever I want.

The other huge influence is literature. Since I learned how to read, I used to devour all kinds of books and novels. In them I could take a journey to faraway places and learn about things that I had never imagined. It was in these books that I turned around the world for the first time, later on I decided that I would do it for real.

The third is my conviction in that the size of your language is the size of your world. I've always been eager to get in touch with the deepness of people and understand their reality, especially when it is completely different to mine. I believe that learning their vernacular is the first tool you need to get really close to an understanding free of your own cross-cultural prejudice. After studying many languages I've realized that language is not only the way in which we communicate, but it contains very important historical, psychological and etymological data about that culture in particular.

My philosophy is to live with such passion and intensity every day that I can fulfill my greatest ambition, to die exhausted instead of bored.

During the last years I worked on board four different ships of Celebrity Cruises: Century, Summit, Constellation and Solstice. On my vacation, I also cruised as a guest with all my family on board the Infinity. You can imagine what a different experience of the profile of Celebrity Cruises do I have. As a guest, I can honestly tell you that if you choose CC, you're in for a treat in all aspects: the quality of the ships, the activities, the food and the service. The ships are beautiful, each one of their three categories: Century Class (1814 passengers), Millennium Class (2034 pax) and So...
