NASA and ESA (European Space Agency) use very large dishes, often in "Deep Space Networks", to recieve signals from their probes such as the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter(MRO), Venus Express and Rosetta. Until recently it was assumed that the technical challenge was beyond the capability of amateur radio enthusiasts. The distances are immense. The signals are weak. The signal sources are difficult to aim for.
However, late in 2005, an amateur radio enthusiast in the UK, Paul Marsh, successfully detected a signal from NASA's MRO at a range of 45 million miles from earth.
