Before the war, death was a very personal thing. The ideal death was with no pain, and having enough time to make your peace with the world. Once you were dead, your family would undress you, wash you, and then redress you. Your body would be laid out in the house, and people could come around to say goodbye. The mirrors and clocks would be covered over. The entire family would dress in black for around a year (traditionally it was a year, but the period was shortening at the beginning of war). Basically the family would arrange everything, so they knew everything that was going on.
