When we think of plankton, many of us who have small children quickly think of that loveable character in Spongebob Squarepants®, but for the rest of us who live in the real world, these are drifting organisms that live in what is called the pelagic zone[i], in bodies of water.  The pelagic zone is anywhere not close to the bottom or to the shore.
