About me - James Thornton

About me

I'm a veteran of three armed services. I joined the Army Reserve in 1988 as an 11B (Infantryman). I really enjoyed myself, but I wanted to follow my father's footsteps into the world of military intelligence. Our family is like Lieutenant Dan's with at least one member serving each generation. Unable to obtain the career field I wanted I transitioned into the Navy. One of the more interesting things I learned is you can develop a tolerance to tear gas. The Army's brew is much, much more potent than the Navy's. Anyhow, I began as a photographer, and photography remains an interest to this day, and I reenlisted as an Intelligence Specialist. After a rewarding ten years filled with deployments to the Middle East including Desert Storm, I left active duty to spend time with my wife and children. After almost a year in civilian life I rejoined the military, this time in the Air Force Reserve, while continuing a civilian career in intelligence.

I have had three near death experiences. I was hit by lightning in 1991 on sentry duty, was accidently locked in the ship's paint locker, and was in a head on collision on US Highway 98 in Alabama. These experiences have left me with a zest and graditude for life.

My other hobbies include doing home repairs and playing video games. To my wife's chagrin I'm not too good at the former and enjoy doing the latter much more. I love to read and write, which is why I joined Helium.
