Please indulge me for a moment in a potted history. There is plenty of evidence that the last ice age lasted from about 23,000 years ago to around 8,000 years ago. As the last ice sheets subsided in Europe and the people who followed the retreating glaciers northward; those hunter-gatherers were (most scholars agree) modern men, Homo sapiens sapiens just like us. Some argue that modern men were living in Britain even before the ice age began 30,000 years ago but due to the obvious nip in the air were forced to take a long holiday in France for15,000 years.
