About me - David Adelman

About me

I grew up with a very charming soul mate Curious George. After reading all the Curious George books and watching all the animated cartoons, videos, and films about this character, I can still proudly say that we still have much in common. Earning the nickname Big Ears as a child was easy for me as I always had to know what was going on. I am passionate about learning and collecting information and am very driven by curiosity. I consider the world to be an opened Pandora's Box that has to be explored, regardless of the perils inside. In elementary school, as everyone conversed in class about sports or comic sections of the newspaper, I spoke about world news. I also fell under the spell of books at a very young age especially science fiction and horror stories. The characters and their stories were swept up like falling autumn leaves into my imagination, and this colourful mosaic influenced the shaping of my imagination. My need to be creative expanded with time, as I began writing poems and short stories. This past year I compiled an anthology of three-hundred poems, cataloged into chapters. Many of these poems deal with political, economic, philosophical, moral and global issues. Though my appetite for books will never be satiated, I have become an avid follower of the arts, especially plays and films. More importantly, I am a citizen of the world, and I adore our great city for being so multi-cultural. I am in love with the cultures of this world. Last summer I was a member of the Vanier College Conversation Club where I met students from East Asia and Latin America. I enjoyed finding out about their cultures as they struggled to speak English. For years, I have dreamt about travelling around the world and exploring cultures and traditions. In CEGEP, I enjoyed overloading in anthropology courses. I have learned that as an anthropologist the ability to be culturally relativistic is very important in order to have an unbiased opinion. I believe as a creative individual with an appreciation for diversity and the ability to put aside my opinion in order to fully understand people's point of views, I would be a very good asset to the world of journalism. From the bottom of my heart, I feel that the combination of curiosity and the quest to learn about individuals and their communities alike can light a spark in the curious minds of the readers, so that they may learn about the ever changing world around them. In a world where sitting down and reading has become harder to achieve, I truly believe that with creativity and understanding, one can bring the readers to put down their Iphones and to pick up the morning paper or read them online with their Iphones .

During my first semester at CEGEP, I attended the Social Science Festival and listened to Gwen Dyer's lecture about the disasters of global warming and the world wide consequences. Talking briefly with Mr. Dyer after the lecture, I wanted to learn more about journalists and their styles of writing. I stumbled across Mark Morford, a columnist for the San Fransisco Gate and discovered how powerful journalism can be as an artistic endeavour. I soon realized that I too, much like Gwen Dyer and Mark Morford needed to express my thoughts and opinions about current events. I joined the Vanier Insider, the college newspaper, and I became the advertising coordinator and contributor. I contributed my poems, movie reviews and articles. I also write movie reviews for a small online company called Orcasound (http://www.orcasound.com/orc/search.php?words=david+adelman) . As Rick says in Casablanca, This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship, so I say this to Journalism and writing!

In summary, I have written a book that I wish to turn into a graphic novel, called Jaded Mind- Eternal Struggle For The Tainted Truth

This summer, I will be documenting and filming the Jews of Santo Domingo, and recording how these 200 Jews manage to hold onto their cultural identity. I hope to bring back inspiration to my community here.
