About me - Mike Stanley

About me

Everything you need to know about me. I didn't come from a broken home, wasn't abused, wasn't poor, wasn't rich, I didn't do drugs or join a gang. My mother was a teacher, and my father was a contractor, and my sister turned out normal... well... not a total freak anyway. So due to the lack of severe emotional pain in my childhood, and early teens, I was not well suited for a career as a musician, and due to strong family values, was unable to lie my way into public office. This lead me to tinker with electronics when I was younger, and my sister started teaching me to program when I was 4 years old. We had a Tandy TRS-80, and I would spend hours hacking away at that keyboard. By the time I was 7 I was building my own programs, and simple games.

Although I spent a lot of time on the TRS-80, I did not grow up with the mindset that I would make a career of computers. I was torn between wanting to be a police officer, a plane pilot, and a few other things. As it turned out, I was in law enforcement for 3 years, but never got the pilot's license. Maybe one day. At any rate, it wasn't until I started college that I would end up making the decision to study computers. I had grown up programming computers as a hobby, and tinkering with various radios and other electronics, and given my dislike for school that started in junior high, I decided to study something I already knew a lot about. As it turns out, I liked college, and started taking classes I didn't need for my major.

Long story short, I ended up with 3 degrees in technology, an outstanding student award, and worked in general information technology fields. I have worked for and with the local, state, and federal government, corporate, and for myself helping individual customers in a wide range of IT activities. My drive for knowledge, and broad experience gave me the ability to help out with IT on the Gulf Coast after hurricane Katrina ripped through the area. This fast paced, get it done at all costs environment would teach me a lot about project management and work related research. It would also teach me how to survive while working 10+ hours (a lot of times 16) a day, 7 days a week for two months at a time (at which point we got 4 days off).

In a nutshell, that is me. Unlike some people in information technology, I'm in it because my mind thinks about computers all the time. While some people need examples based on things they already know about to help them understand computers, I use computers to help me understand other things. As one person in college said about me, I think in binary.

Computers & Technology > Computer Maintenance How to make your computer run faster

At some point, everyone has been frustrated by a sluggish computer. The part that really ruffles peoples feathers is the same computer was running just fine weeks ago, but now is barely moving at a crawl. So you ask, is there anything I can do about this? Sure there is, and depending on what the cause it likely won't cost you anything to fix. When people use their computers, they tend to install programs and re-configure this and that. As time moves on, the files on the hard drive get shattered out of order, and some files become fragmented. This can cause your system to respond slower as ...
