If getting 'high' is being defined as being happy or excited, then the answer is people do it because they enjoy it. The typical 'high' is the effect of a rise in dopamine. This is what happens neurologically when riding a roller coaster, using cannabis, using cocaine, as well as an array of other things. Dopamine is produced any time one is excited, or on a drug that forces excitement. This excitement creates satisfaction and contentment. Not many people avoid dopamine increase. Even if someone is against the use of drugs, how many people are against being excited?
