Descartes responded to a major philosophical debate with the famous declaration: "I think, therefore I am." My declaration is "I (teach, dance, sing, write, love my wife and my family, worship God, and [yes] think). Therefore, I am. My nearly six decades have been focused on earning gray hairs and gray matter, My interests are those of a generalist. You might catch me reading an article on the "big bang", a long biography of Aaron Burr, or a pot-boiler western by Louis L'Amour. You will rarely catch me without a book close to hand.
My wife and I live in Tidewater, Virginia, a great place to buy a wonderful ham sandwich or an aircraft carrier. Within 120 miles of us are the birthplaces of English history in America, the capital of the Confederacy, the Colonial capital of Virginia, a world-class physics research center, beaches, incredible museums and the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. This is the perfect place for the generalist to explore, well, just about any interest.
Most of my daytime hours are spent working with "gifted" children, those wonderful, challenging people of incredible potential who live on the fringe of the bell curve. My job is to teach them to think critically, to expose them to a world of complex ideas, and to motivate them to enjoy that which makes them special.
There is something deeply embedded in our humanity that compels us to seek meaning in life. A crisis may command all our attention for a time, but then we may spend years asking the question: "Why me?" Good fortune dropped in our laps may compel us to somber reflection on why we were blessed and others, by contrast, seem to be cursed by life. People are born. People die. Remove shoes. Roll up pants cuffs. Be careful of splinters as you tread the boardwalk over the dune and catch your first glimpse of the pre-dawn glow looking east across the expanse of the Atlantic.
