About me - Richard Max Detrano

About me

I write articles, personal essays, fiction and humor. I have been published in Small Press Magazine, Alaska Airlines Magazine, The Sun's 'reader's write' section, Northwest Magazine, and The Seattle Weekly. In the 1970's I got started publishing articles on Colorado history for The Boulder Daily Camera newspaper. I like writing. Some people pray, or meditate, or go for a jog, or to the gym, or knit, or do crosswords. I write.

Not all my writing is relevant for Helium. However, I find the discipline and broad subject matter a challenge. I am never lost for something to write about.

There is a link to my blog somewhere on this page, where I post short pieces in lots of genres. Writing for the Internet lets me play with different formats. Writing can be lonely work. The Internet gives me an avenue for feedback. And, it does not take months to see my words in print

I have been an independent publishers' rep, an importer, a retailer, and a single dad among other things. I am a grandfather. I love dogs. I once lived on an island in Greece. I have traveled widely in Latin America, Indonesia, most states in the USA, Europe and the Caribbean. I drove a car from Seattle to Guatemala. Criss-crossed the USA many times over. I still drive a VW camper van. No, I don't want to sell it.

I play a little guitar, bang on drums (pots, pans, or anything else), write songs, play harmonica, try to speak Spanish, and go for long walks with a notebook to scribble ideas.

Dating after 50 and shopping for a used car have some things in common. In both situations we are looking for compatibility and trustworthiness. Some are tempted to buy the first sporty model they meet. Experts advise we slow down and ask a few simple questions from this handy checklist before even considering taking that vehicle for a test drive. 1. Ask yourself, how much car you can handle? Despite what your brain is telling you, you pro...
