Wow...where do I start? Well, I'm definitely not a professional writer and I don't write for a living. Actually I have a career in law enforcement and even though at times it stresses me out behind belief, I do love what I do. I have a beautiful son who has absolutely made me re-evaluate my life and what I value as important. I've realized that I've been taking so many things for granted. It's amazing how having children can completely change your perspective and viewpoint on life. You realize how precious life really is. Especially being a mom, you don't realize until you have kids, the sacrifices you are willing to make for them and the things you are willing to give up. All of these things just come naturally. You do these things out of love, so that they are safe and happy. I wouldn't change it for the world.
Now about the writing....I guess I've always like to write. Mainly it's just trying to find the time to sit down and write. I hadn't really tried to write for a long time, because lately I'm just not able to concentrate. I've always heard that good writers have a certain time of day that they're able to write. Maybe I just had to find that time of day that works for me. So far, writing late at night seems to be the best time for me. I feel life's experiences are at the top of the list for me when I'm trying to write. In other words, I try to reflect on my own experiences while writing.
For the past 10 years, I've been wanting to write a book, but I just don't know where to start. I've thought about children's books, but can't seem to get started. That's how I came across Helium. I was looking on the internet for tips on writing and sure enough, Helium popped up at the top of my search. I'd never heard about Helium and I thought the idea of being able to write, whether you're an amateur or professional and then be rated by your peers, definitely sparked my interest. I really didn't expect a lot out of Helium and for a long time, I didn't log in and kind of forgot about it. I came across Helium recently and thought, what do I got to lose. I almost feel addicted to it now. I want to write. I feel it's a way for my mind to release all of these thoughts that have become clustered in my head. I think a lot of people go through this at one time or another. It almost feels like my brain is venting. It's a little intimidating knowing your peers will be reading and rating your articles. It takes a little getting used to, but the constructive criticism just makes me want to try harder. Besides, like I said earlier, I haven't written in a long time. So I have a lot to work on.
I've really enjoyed the opportunity that Helium gives you to write. I feel like I have a voice and even though I'm not talking face to face with others, someone is listening by reading my articles and opinions. It's exciting to know that.
