I have spent the best part of forty years working in zoos. I have been employed in private, commercial and national collections in the capacity of keeper, head keeper, curator and collections manager. Animals, and people have been my life and I number elephants, chimpanzees and tigers amongst my closest friends.
As can be expected, over the years I have developed a diverse range of expertise....sadly stagnating now a little.
Four years ago, finding myself reluctantly divorced with two mortgages and a range of debts I decided to break free. I sold my house and all my possessions and hit the road. I had not particular aim in mind other than to 'go with the flow'. I had to be pretty frugal because I had very little money, no income, no pension. That said I thought that if I worried about money then I would not enjoy myself...so I don't worry (too much).
My journey first took me to Turkey where I travelled using zoo visits as my direction. Seeing a cheap flight to India I moved on there. A couple of months later another chance cheap flight took me to Bangkok in Thailand. Since then I have been happily 'stuck' in Asia.
I have visited Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Macau, Hong Kong, China, Sabah and some of these several times. Home is wherever I lay my head each night.
I have always been an avid people watcher and have a diverse range of interests and so have not regretted a single day of my journey.
Throughout my travels I have continued to work on 'ZooNews Digest' an eZine I started about twelve years ago. It is the most widely circulated zoo related magazine (cyber or terrestrial) in the world.
A few years ago I sold my house and practically all my possessions and hit the road. I have been travelling ever since. I have passed through Turkey, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, The Philippines and much of Asia. By necessity I move on and stay cheaply. My few possessions are valuable, valuable to me. I have a mobile phone, a pocket computer, a small digital camera, my wallet and my passport. I keep my valuables on me at all times.
