I am a 38 year old woman who, like most of you, dream of becoming a published writer. I am currently working as an accountant for a international textile machine manufacturer in northern Georgia. I also act as a controller for a pneumatic / hydraulic distributor to the large carpet industry in my area. As well, I am a student at a local state college where I am working on a bachelor's in accounting. Sounds strange, huh? It's kind of like the chicken before the egg.
Or was it ever established that the egg came before the chicken? At any rate, I
have worked as an accountant for 10 years now without a degree.
In 2005, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Before this life changing event, I was completely satsified with my life and where I was going. Although, I lacked a degree, I had the job and the degree didn't seem that important. However, during all the emotional chaos of diagnosis, treatment, and ultimate lost of the hope of ever having children, I discovered that there were many things in my
life that did bother me.
When I found myself flat on my back enduring a 6 week healing process, I experienced a profound discovery about myself. I had regrets and lots of them. On the top of my list was education. Coming in second was the fact that I had never attempted to become a published writer. So, I made myself some promises.
As soon as I was back on my feet and anticipating a clean checkup, I enrolled in college. Today, I have to admit that its harder than it sounds but I'm hanging in there. The challenge has pushed me to limits I've never experienced and furthered my own understanding of self. After several literture classes, I have
been pleasantly surprised that my professors also see a writer in me. So, here I am.
I still don't know that I am a writer, but I do know that I sure have fun doing it. I anticipate discovering what Helium has to offer and what I might offer to Helium.

"Sissy! Look Jess! It's Sissy!" My heart warmed at the sight of my fifteen-year-old brother. As he approached with our younger cousin on his heals, I could see the excitement on his face and the paper held tightly in his hand. "Sissy, I made three 'A's'! L...L...Look here," he stuttered, "three 'A's' sissy!" Jess was tugging at his pants desperately trying to get his attention. "See here Sissy! I g...g...got an A in behavior, an...n...n A in Math and...and...an A in speech!" His fingers were hitting the paper and his eyes would meet mine with each show of the good grade to make sure I seen...
