As a former college president and CEO of my own capital campaign and strategic planning firm, I have spent most of my life writing for one reason or another. I suppose, if you count the fees my clients or employers paid me, you could say I was a writing professional. Like most writers of non-fiction, I like to tell myself I write to inform but, after a lifetime of viewing current events, I have to confess I really write to vent as well as to inform. I like to ask people to consider a different viewpoint from their own, not to change them but to enlighten them. You can always go back inside the box but it doesn't hurt to think outside it once in a while.
My wife of 35 years and I are sailors, having lived aboard a boat full time for over ten years. Now that sailing is no longer practicle my wife owns a bookstore (her 5th) in Mountain Home, Arkansas and I write.
