Takes All Types is a global grassroots program that uses social media to recruit volunteer blood donors and alert them when their specific blood type is needed in their community. A Facebook application, text message short codes, widgets and websites allow Internet users to sign up to the Global Blood Donor Registry.

This innovative system enables hospitals and local collection centers to mobilize their local donor population immediately, by blood type, on a scale commensurate with the need. The system provides emergency response capabilities in times of crisis, and moreover holds the promise to stabilize the blood supply, reduce the incidence of shortages, and vastly reduce the time that donated blood spends in storage, waiting to be transfused into a patient. This keeps all of us safer and healthier, and enables us to work together to save lives.
