Sports, animals, and writing have been lifelong interests of Barbaraanne Helberg. Now in her post-family years and approaching "fulltime retirement," Ms. Helberg lives in the small town atmosphere of Napoleon, Ohio. Across the road from her current residence, which she shares with her female Newfie, is the Maumee River, of Erie and Maumee Canal fame.
Fulltime retirement means retiring completely to the fulltime muse of the pen, Ms. Helberg claims. She is a graduate of The Famous Writers' School of Westport, Connecticut (1968); a certificate holder in How to Write Contemporary Fiction, conducted by Dr. Dennis Hensley through the University of Toledo, Ohio, Division of Continuing Education (1995); and has completed two Writer's Digest School programs, The Novel Writing Workshop (1997), and Writing and Selling Short Stories (2002).
In 2007, Ms. Helberg became a student in the American Writers and Artists Inc. correspondence course, How to Successfully Write and Publish Children's Books. Currently, Ms. Helberg is also managing editor of her own self-publishing endeavor, BAAT Publishing, and associated enterprises.
In 1964, and again from 1983 to 1993, Ms. Helberg was busy writing articles as a government and sports reporter for the Northwest-Signal newspaper located in Napoleon. Henry County's small town councils was her beat. She also published several feature articles in the Signal and served as a freelancer in sports and government reports for the nearby Deshler Flag and the former Leipsic Messenger.
Although the art of fiction has been Ms. Helberg's greatest writing passion over the years, generally putting words to paper (or typewriter) continues to fascinate and motivate her for the future.
A divorcee, Ms. Helberg has two grown children and one grandchild.
My passion is ...
putting words to paper.
I know too much about ...
living on the edge of a weekly paycheck.
My parents always told me ...
honesty and a sense of humor will get you there (anywhere).
My childhood ambition ...
was, and always has been, to be a worthy writer.
My favorite memory ...
is time spent with the cows and in the fields of our family farm.
Why I write ...
Writing, creativity with words, is an all time high.
What I am reading/watching/listening to ...
I'm always reading Dick Francis and Walter Farley, watching sports events, and listening to my inner voice that says, "Write, write, write, for now is the time of your life!"
My first job ...
was brief, sorting tomatoes in a plant in tiny New Bavaria, Ohio, but after that I got my first writing job, as a reporter with the Napoleon Northwest-Signal.
My best moment ...
was my most humbling, holding my newborn grandchild.
My inspiration ...
is a strange combination of nature' s powerful, unconquerable bodies of water and the spirit of Rocky Balboa, the unconquerable underdog.
The Philosophy of Remembering In Order to Forgive
Memory is a healer and a catalyst. Forgiveness is an exercise in mental health, and it begins with the subconscious mind.
On the global stage, Americans and American allies have struggled to come to grips with forgiving the events of September 11, 2001 - the unwarranted attack on and collapse of the World Trade in New York City, the plane explosion at the Pentagon, and the disastrous hi-jacking of another flight over Pennsylvania. The conscious mind first searches for someone, or some other country to blame for that horrific, premeditate...
