About me - Roddy Harris

About me

I am married with two grown daughters and three grandchildren. I'm a veteran of the US Army and a former teacher who has worked at many different jobs in my lifetime. Currently I am working with developmentally disabled adults.

Being a country boy from Western New York State I tend to look at things with a very unique view. I grew up working on farms around my home. While growing up working for the farmers I learned a lot about their no nonsense approach to life. My writing often tends to express their down on the farm common sense and humor. One of my greatest joys in life is to watch people and to see how they act and react to their physical environment. I will also enjoy talking to a wide variety of people to gain an insight of the feelings, needs and desires that they have. This way I can use my experience and knowledge along with the insights of the people I speak with and observe to develop a common sense approach to my writing. Some of the subjects I enjoy writing about are politics, sports, computers, family life, work experiences, woodworking, crafts, common sense issues and everyday life. My writing often deals with issues that affect the common person. I try to express the needs of the common person and their simple solutions to today's complex problems. Many times I will discuss issues that have come as a direct result of something that has affected me. I will often point out my lack of use of common sense. I am not immune to failure of mental functions as are all people. I believe that we can only learn from our mistakes. I often try to add humor to my writing to make the article more interesting and to show how some of life's problems can be taken too seriously.

I have written a couple of books one that has recently been published by Publish America. "After Terrorism: A Survival Story" deals with a brother and sister who deal with the aftermath of world wide destruction of life. My books take on all of the previous issues I discussed. I have always enjoyed writing but with family, work and other obligations I was never able to devote the time to writing that I now can. I really started writing seriously seven years ago when both of my daughters decided to get married in the same summer. My wife and I had planned it so something like this would never happen as our daughters were born five years apart. But you know the saying "the best laid plans." Our older daughter worked to get an education and establish her career while the younger daughter fell in love. Hence we had weddings three months apart. To escape from the constant wedding chatter and headaches I was getting I started to write. It was my only chance to escape and feel free from all that was going on around me. Writing has become my passion and I hope to hone my writing skills further.
