About me - V R Rutledge

I was born on a military reservation, because I was. My mother took advantage of my father's being in the Army Air Corps to go to the base hospital. It was probably the best available place. Both of my grandmothers were native American, but I was born White.

Politics, News & Issues > Pulitzer Center What would be the most dramatic difference, in terms of U.S. foreign policy, between a President John McCain and a President Barack Obama?

Foreign Policy, who is most qualified and what would be the most dramatic differences of the given choices? Do we look to a patriot and veteran who is American in the most traditional sense, or do we need someone of the World, who knows the issues and conflicts first hand? What kinds of differences would we see? Foreign Poli...

Parenting & Pregnancy > Parenthood Are parents always parents or should they learn to let go as their children age?

The question Are parents always parents is redundant. Certainly there will come a time when the children are independent, self-sufficient and perhaps even support the parents, but it is the parent or parents that they support. For thousands of years humanity has espoused the 'traditional' family model. In the Torah, we are t...

Relationships & Family > Romance & Sexuality A study says students with higher IQs are less likely to be sexually active

Having done the research, I came to the following conclusions. The initial incidence of sexual activity, as well as the amount of sexual activity is inversely related to IQ. This is not true of very low IQ scores, but begins at about IQ 70. Any further surmise needs to take into account that the incidence and frequency of se...

Politics, News & Issues > Political & Economic Theory The impact of immigration on the earnings of natives

When we consider the question, the most obvious way to address it is to make some comment about the number of jobs, the labor pool, the cost of labor and the earnings of citizens versus non-citizens. That is not the question. The question is much more complex and at once simpler. If you have a large influx of people who will...

Relationships & Family > Love & Relationships What is love?

More words have been written about love than are stored away on all subjects combined, including the stored words on Love. Poems, letters, essays, books, epistles, short stories, and every other kind of writing from graffiti to stone tablets have had love as their subject. Through all of this, we still don't have a certain d...

Creative Writing > Poetry Poetry: Inspirational

I didn't write this a depressed, emotionally needy, pitiful me, Who, wrestling with the demons of despair and doubt, was feeling old and, insofar as life goes, useless. I didn't write this, a cheap antique, unloved, unneeded, and unwanted without a future save for lonely, bleak old age. a living, voiceless, ghost of what was...

Creative Writing > Poetry Poetry: On love

Love as a sonnet A quarter of a century have I, In marriage to a lovely woman bound. Whose very presence serves to make me sigh For all the peace and happiness I've found. I cannot tell you what has made it so Nor tell you why it is that I remain I only know that I can never go Without a deep, and soul-destroying, pain. To f...

Politics, News & Issues > Climate Change Global warming: Fact or fiction?

In 1896 a Nobel laureate, one Svante August Arrhenius of Sweden, produced a paper on the effects of Carbon Dioxide emissions caused by human activity. He observed that the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere had risen and was continuing to rise. Whatever else we consider, we must realize that the changes have been occurring for ...

Food & Drink > Drinks (Other) Does drinking mineral water have health benefits?

Drinking mineral water is no different than drinking any other water, unless you're drinking distilled water. All water contains minerals, that is if it isn't recently processed by distillation. The illusion that drinking a large amount of water every day is somehow extra healthy, is just that, an illusion. You need water to...

Politics, News & Issues > Economic News Is technology the key to alleviating world poverty?

Technology is a tool. Whether it can be used to alleviate poverty will be determined by the users, not the tool. While technology refers to the application of knowledge for practical purposes, Green Technology refers to the use of technology in ways that either help or at least do not damage the ecology. This field will even...
