About me - Kofi Thompson

About me

I am a freelance writer with regular columns in The Network Herald; The Insight; and The Independent newspapers - all in my native Ghana.

Where I am also a guest, from time to time, on the popular weekend Hot FM radio discussion programme, "Alhaji and Alhaji".

I was born at Kwadaso, in Kumasi, Ghana's second city, on the 31st of July, 1953.

A graduate of the international "University of Hard-Knocks" (with a doctorate degree in suffering, and, a master's in fortitude!), I have virtually no formal education - and am largely self-taught!

I have three children and two grandchildren. My son and eldest daughter (and her two dear sons), live in London. The youngest of my two daughters, lives in Akita, Japan.

And I am married to a German medical doctor - who works in rural Ghana

In addition to my work as a freelance journalist, I also farm (currently at the conversion stage to farming organically!) - and help run my family's farms in the Eastern Region of Ghana (where we've farmed since the early 1900's, from the colonial era!).

I love dogs; art; walking along the beach; helping to preserve Ghana's biodiversity through the use of community-based eco-tourism, as a tool for conservation, in the country; and writing ( current project: an "African novel" - which is a work in progress! ).

And above all, my passion, is using my writing to help create a just and fair society in Ghana: one in which the nation's resources, benefit all the people - not just a powerful few with greedy ambitions!

Title: (Hospice Final Journeys)

Though now all deceased
At the time of the interviews
They were very much alive
And awaiting their deaths in a hospice

Their touching reflections
About daily having to face the cold fact
Of their impending deaths

And their "whiles-alive-images" in black and white
Those poignant full-faced photographs
Were veritable "before-and-after" studies in quiet courage
That resonate with all the living

And the equally emotionally powerful images
The sympathetic photographs taken just after their deaths
Are wondrous depictions of faces
Of long-suff...
