About me - Kofi Thompson

About me

Now freelancing, I used to have regular columns in the following newspapers, in my native Ghana: The Independent; The Insight; and The Network Herald.

I also appear as a guest, from time to time, on Ghana's most popular weekend current affairs radio discussion programme, "Alhaji and Alhaji" - aired live each Saturday on the Accra-based Radio Gold FM.

I was born at Kwadaso, a suburb in Ghana's second city, Kumasi, on the 31st of July, 1953.

I am a graduate of the world-famous  "University of Hard-Knocks"  - with a master's degree in suffering, and a doctorate in fortitude! Having very little formal education, I am largely self-taught.

I am blessed with three wonderful children and two adorable grandchildren. My son Jonathan and eldest daughter Gladys (and her two sons: my dear grandsons, Joshua and Daniel), live in London. The youngest of my two daughters, Michiko, lives in Akita-Japan with her mother, Setsuko. My wife Birgit is a German medical doctor.

In addition to my work as a freelance journalist, I also help run my family's farms in the Eastern Region of Ghana (where we've farmed since the early 1900's from the colonial era - and grow cocoa organically!).

I love dogs; art; walking along the beach; writing (current project: a  novel - which is a work in progress! ); and helping to preserve Ghana's biodiversity through the use of community-based eco-tourism, as a tool for conservation.

Above all, my passion is using my writing to help create a just and fair society in Ghana: one in which the nation's resources benefit all the people of our country - not just a powerful few with greedy ambitions!

Title: (Hospice Final Journeys) Though now all deceased At the time of the interviews They were very much alive And awaiting their deaths in a hospice Their touching reflections About daily having to face the cold fact Of their impending deaths And their "whiles-alive-images" in black and white Those poignant full-faced photographs Were veritable "before-and-after" studies in quiet courage That resonate with all the living And the equally emotionally powerful images The sympathetic photographs taken just after their deaths Are wondrous depictions of faces Of long-suffering souls finally at...
