I, with a French first name and a German professional last name (Oppenheimer), am the current-day embodiment of a line of food-conscience ancestors. My grandfather from Strausburg, Alsace Lorraine, was a Matre'D married to a great cook, Nanna, from Pennsylvania Amish country. Nanny's son, who lived with us and did some of the cooking, had been a natural cook in the US Air Force, And, one of my father's brothers was a New England baker for 60 years, Not surprisingly, none of them ever wrote a cookbook, and maybe never read one.
On the other hand, I was a food writer for local NYC newspapers for many years and accumulated somewhere between 700 and a thousand cookbooks. That is only the tip of my resources iceberg, In NYC I have access to fabulous libraries, the internet, and several bookstores that specialize in cookbooks. Lucky me!
Now, as a retired daily writer but still freelancing, and after having traveled to all the major continents of the world, I want to share my accumulated food and cultural knowledge. (My family and friends are urging me to write a book.)
Helium suggested a collaborative for people interested in the time, place and cultural impact on food. So, here you have it; an "All About Cookbooks Collaborative".
