Well, to begin with, I am a twenty three year old female from Brooklyn, NY. I am a single parent of an 18 month old son. I've been writing poetry since the age of 12 and found motivation through a counselor of mine in elementary school. He informed me about a contest of those in elementary school. To my excitement it was a poetry contest in which we were told to write about anything we wanted. I decided to take this opportunity to write of my hate for drug use because of the damage it has caused on one of my family members. This poem ended up 4 pages long and expressed deep thoughts. I won this contest in first place and was given a certificate and a savings bond. To my surprise, my counselor did not attend this day of what I considered Victory. He always told me to go for my dreams. My counselor passed away a year later and I had a hard time forgiving him for missing my "Victory Day" till now. His words are a constant reminder that maybe one day I will be successful and here I am in my continuous journey of expressing my poetry with hopes to write many books someday.
A twenty three yr old woman With nothing left but a dream In inspiration to write poetry She gains almost everything A house and a pool in her backyard Her mom with a smile on her face Her son to have his own room A dream she seems to chase For now she lives in the projects With hopes to find a job She can't go home very late Because she's scared of getting robbed Her mom gives her hope everyday That soon she will succeed So college gets the best of her And her poetry feels her needs She wants to become a success story Like the ones we see on T.V. She has her hand out for reach But doesn't...
