About me - Jane Brunton

About me

Where to begin? More importantly what to leave out? I am guessing you don't have the time or inclination to know me in depth. And perhaps the less said the better.

Most relevant for this bio would be why I write. I suppose being an only child accounts for my ability to entertain myself. I learned early in life that if I said I was bored or had nothing to do, my mother would swiftly and mercilessly fill that void with some unpleasant household task.

So it wasn't long before I learned to amuse myself and always look busy. The latter served me well when I got a government job.

Now there is no government job and no mother. But the habits die hard. If I am not drawing, painting, sewing, crocheting, gardening, sculpting, or visiting with friends then I am writing.

I know. I sound like somebody's boring old granny but trust me; I am neither a grandmother nor boring.

I am a hell of a lot of fun; outrageous in fact. Sad people seek me out for a good cheering up. Confused people seek me out for sage advice. Bored people - not so much. Like my mother before me, I can find them something to do in a hurry.

Our childhoods are shaped by our parents and our experiences. My mother's polio and my father's unfaithfulness to her shaped mine in peculiar and painful ways.

I am afraid I didn't learn much from my mother's poor choice and found myself several womanizers too. Yes, there may be something to the theory that we women are all looking for our daddies.

That phase is over now but I met some fascinating characters, lived in some far away places, did some dangerous things and even landed in a South American jail.

Those years provided the impetus and the fodder for interesting memoirs. Thank the gods that long term memory stays with us because I don't even remember if I had breakfast today.

I am so glad you took the time to read a little bit about me. I hope you will enjoy my articles as much as I enjoy writing them.

Briefly me

My passion is ...

trying to stay alive and relatively sane

I know too much about ...

not knowing enough

My parents always told me ...

that adopted children were better than natural children since they were chosen rather than being foisted upon their parents. And you ask why I had low self esteem?

My childhood ambition ...

to be adopted! No seriously, something to do with nature or medicine, a veterinarian or perhaps an entymologist. I secretly harbored a desire to be an artist. Secretly because my mother told me they always died starving, cold and alone in garrets.

My favorite memory ...

getting up early of a Saturday morn and hiking in the fields and woodlands near my childhood home.

Why I write ...

It is an urge that is hard to explain. I explore problems and come up with solutions when I write. I also love to tell stories and to make people laugh.

What I am reading/watching/listening to ...

I love mysteries, forensics and psychological dramas

My first job ...

working for my father.

My best moment ...

having an anecdote about the plight of Latino women published in Spanish

My inspiration ...

anything and everything

I'll be over there cleaning out the place. Wonderful, thanks again," said Mr. Robins replacing the phone precisely into its cradle. He leaned back in his office chair with his hands behind his head and smiled a...
