I was raised in Idaho, at a time when most of the land was not encumbered with fences. My brothers and I could ride all day and never leave the ranch. When the body is allowed to roam free, the mind will surely follow.
My favorite writer's quote is attributed to Mark Twain, and goes something like this... "The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a great matter. It is the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning." Smart man, that Sam Clemens.
My favorite poet still remains A. B. "Banjo" Paterson of Australia, who at the age of 21 in the year 1865 wrote The Man From Snowy River, and the opening lines never fail to grab and hold me until the last verse.
"There was movement at the station for the word had passed around,
That the colt from old Regret had got away,
and joined the wild bush horses,
He was worth a thousand pound,
So all the cracks had gathered to the fray."
