I was a freelance writer over 25 years ago. This was before the "worldwide web." It was a struggle back then to get your work published, mainly because of the marketing aspects. I found myself spending more time soliciting editors more than writing. But I did get a few works published in such places as "Guideposts", "Complete Woman," "Ford Times" "Writer's Digest" and others. To pay the bills, I worked as a correspondence course writing instructor, helping insurance personnel learn to write clearer letters. I think we could use a lot more of that "clear writing" in the insurance industry, don't you?
I then worked in the social services field, but I was never very far from the writing life, even there. I found myself writing grants, policies and procedures, and doing PR work...newsletters, radio shows, press releases, PSA's, etc. It was a different type of writing, but it was writing, which I love.
Two years ago my husband took early retirement and we moved to Florida along with our 15 year-old son. I also have two grown children who also moved to the area, which is great. I found Helium quite by accident one day when I was looking online for any freelance jobs, etc. The problem with looking online for jobs is..there are a lot of scams in cyberspace, as everyone knows.
Helium is a great outlet for me as far as my writing. A person won't get rich doing it, but it is nice to be able to have thousands of people read what you write. afterall, that is what is so enjoyable about writing....having people read it.
Should faith influence a citizen's vote? Yes, but not in the way that many may think. One of the most defining and controversial faith-based issues that iinfluences voters is pro-life versus pro-choice in regard to abortion. As a Catholic, I've always struggled with this issue every election. Not supporting the ideologies of either of the two major political parties, I usually opted not to vote. This was my way of dealing with the issue...not dealing with it at all. But after 30 years of not voting, I began to think about the reasons for my apathy.
