I started out as a "colored person". In the fifties and very early sixties, people of African-American or Negro descent were simply called "colored" people. Native Americans were called "Indians" and people of any Asian descent were lumped together as "Orientals. Most Hispanics were dubbed "Mexican and Africans, and other more obscure people groups were rarely mention.
"Colored was not considered derogatory unless it was used by a Caucasian, or as we referred to them, "white" person in a condescending context. I.E. ,"You colored folks love eating watermelon."
