About me - Isaiah Montoya

About me

Hello, I am Isaiah Montoya, born in Galveston, Texas in 1975. I began growing up in Beaumont, Texas and finished growing up 800 miles across the Lone Star State in El Paso.
Moving to El Paso was a culture shock because I am mainly Lipan Apache, and El Paso was created and inhabited mostly by Hispanics with strong ties to Mexico. My family did not speak much Spanish, yet many El Pasoans did, and held it against me. I have since learned to love and embrace the Spanish language (off the cuff adequate Spanish speaker), and the Mexican culture.
When young I was poor by American standards, but by American Hispanic and Native American standards we were average. My family taught me to not base my life around money, and be happy with other things.
I developed a love for study which was evident to my school teachers but not necessarily on report cards. I was a classic, "He's got great potential," kid.
During high school I joined the newspaper staff and became the sports page editor. At El Paso Community College I became editor-in-chief and went on to become a freelance writer, which I still am, for various local publications including, The El Paso Community Bugle, The Beacon, Eastside Reporter, Border Observer, Sun City News, Med Resource, and Southwest Senior amongst others.

Politics, News & Issues > Basketball News & Opinion Assessing Kobe Bryant's worth

Kobe Bryant's worth as an NBA player is still voluminous despite losing in the Finals again in 2008 and being 29 years old. Is Kobe the player of most worth in the NBA? No. Should Bryant be compared to Jordan from here on? Absolutely not! For the first time in his 12 year career Bryant was the NBA's regular season MVP. Bryant put up 28.3 points per game, 6.3 rebounds per game, 5.4 assists per game and 1.8 steals per game. The NBA MVP award has eluded Bryant throughout the years, as the award went to Jordan, Malone, O'Neal, Iverson, Duncan, Garnett, Nash and Nowitzki. His worth, though, qui...
