Hi, I'm Karen, a writer, teacher, author of five books and editor/compiler of two others.
My most recently published book (January 2011) is' The Greatest Guide to Winning Competitions', ISBN: 9781907906046. It is a collection of the techniques, hints and tips that I have developed and successfully used to win high value prizes from competitions. The book has already made an impact - I am delighted with how well it is selling.
A new release for November 2011 will be 'Fragile Earth: An Anthology of Poems', ISBN: 9780956354631 (Baskalier Publishing). This will be available from Amazon.co.uk and other traditional bookstores.
'Extinction: An Anthology of Poems', ISBN:9780956354624, was published via my imprint, Baskalier Publishing in November 2010. This features the winning and shortlisted poems in the annual International science-themed poetry competition that I run (see www.baskalierpublishing.com for details of this year's competition).
'Dizzy Dandy and other Short Stories', ISBN: 9780956354617, was another book launch success for 2010 (Baskalier Publishing) and is suitable for children(8+) and adults. I take this into schools in the UK on my Author Visit days. If you would like to organise a visit, please contact me via my website.
'Chasing Dreams: A Collection of Poems', ISBN:9780956354600, was my first colection of poems - this book has exceeded all expectations and will shortly be going for reprint.
'Deceptive Encounters', ISBN:9781848760493. This is a forensic science-themed novel, which supports the secondary school science curriculum here in the UK. It was published in 2008. Readership: age 10 to teens. I use it extensively for school author visits - a few schools have incorporated it into their science curriculum as a cross-curricular resource.
My first book, released in 2007, was 'Competitive Edge: Prize Winning Secrets'. It is a limited edition. There are still a few copies left if you wish to obtain a collectable item. I am still waiting for my first customer from the USA - will it be you? This is popular in the UK with competition enthusiasts. Several copies have found their way to Australia and Canada over the last few months - all with good feedback.
If you are a poet, or have an interest in global science issues, please take a look at the competition I am organising (this is an annual event), www.baskalierpublishing.com

It is quite natural for potential competitors to talk themselves out of entering competitions offering high-value prizes on the basis that they are 'rigged' or 'fixed' in some way. This is often a protection mechanism, a way of dealing with the high-odds of failure for inexperienced entrants. Competition enthusiasts (known as 'compers') do little to deny this rumor; it works in their favor. As an experienced comper, prolific prize-winner and author of two competition hobby books, 'Competitive Edge - Prize Winning Secrets' and 'The Greatest Guide to Winning Competitions", I can categoricall...
