About me - Mary W. Matthews

About me

I've been a writer and editor for my entire professional life. As an editor, I have won awards for excellence from several national educational nonprofits.

I've also been deeply interested in the philosophy of religion all my life: IS there a God? What has God done? What does God want from humanity? In the late 1990s, I attended Wesley Theological Seminary, in Washington, DC. I was graduated summa cum laude, "with highest honors," and it was NOT easy. I am relieved and thankful to report that God was NOT calling me to a pastoral ministry (my first thought would always be to say "Take two psalms and call me in the morning"!), but I am ordainable.

Today I call myself a "freelance theologian." I hold to no one religion's theology, holding ALL of them to be faulty and limited to the human perspective of those who founded their religion or who developed their religion's theology. I have a special expertise in the Bible, which I have studied for more than 25 years.

If Hell existed, there would be a special place in it for bibliolaters, people who worship the Bible as if it were as perfect and "inerrant" as God is. If the Bible were as inerrant as God is, it would be indistinguishable from God. I can tell the difference just fine; can you?

Religion & Spirituality > Thoughts on God Is God an invention of man's mind or true being?

Is God an invention of man’s mind or a true being? The answer to this question is a resounding YES! God exists. God is transcendent, immanent, eternal, omnipresent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent. God exists as the Tao exists, both “outside” and “above” humanity, AND "inside" and permeating humanity. Some people see little value in making distinctions between God and the Tao: both of them are utterly beyond human ownership, even though many sects THINK they own their religion’s ancient holy book and their ancient holy book’s modern interpretation. ...
