It took me a long time to say, "I'm a writer." I spent thousands of dollars in therapy - I mean graduate school - to have the courage and the voice to become a writer (in my mind).
My life currently consists of daily advice from family members. "Cathy, you should be a teacher," echoes in my mind day after day and night after night. I'm sure I would love teaching but I'm not ready to be a teacher. I want to try my hand at being a full-time writer. All of my friends teach and I have much respect for the profession. I like setting my own hours and working through the night. My imagination runs rampant through imaginary worlds that do not like to be disrupted at 6am to go teach a class in American literature. I'm misunderstood.
My career consists of three years spent as a script writer/office administrator/customer service representative in the medical industry. Two years spent assisting the vice presidents of sales and marketing. Three years as the manager/book buyer for a small independent children's bookstore. I have an undergraduate degree in English and a graduate degree in professional writing. I've been a freelance writer and story teller for the past three years (along with odd jobs here and there). I teach swimming lessons in the summer.
My dream is to write plays, movies, and music with my husband. He is the most supportive and inspiring man in the world. He gives me the confidence I need to cope with criticism and the attention I need as a woman.
This is my story as of today. I'm very excited about getting to know the community here at Helium. I've been out of school for six months and in need of support and advice from fellow writers.
