Even though the book does not mention it, this book takes place in the future. Nancy Farmer hints that it takes place in the future by saying there are hovercrafts, which use anti-gravity generators to hover. It also says that the story takes place in a place called Opium, or former Mexico, which has turned into a drug empire. The House of the Scorpion is the story of Matteo Alacrn, a clone of the ruler of Opium, Matteo Alacrn, also known as El Patrn. It all starts with Matt being harvested, not born.
