About me - Jim Crawford

About me

I live in the Lakes Region of NH, in my opinion the best possible place to live.

I'm a retired Civil Engineer. I drive a campus shuttle bus at Plymouth State University part-time.  For seven years, I drove a school bus part-time, driving high school sports teams to their away games. My favorites were the girls basketball and field hockey teams. I did my best to amuse and help motivate them, dressing up in horror costumes around Halloween, posting motivational signs on the bus before big games, etc. They rewarded me with team jackets, the same medals they earned, team pictures, etc.

I enjoy helping and interacting with kids. I voluntarily mowed the local baseball field for three years, my wife and I are Fresh Air Fund volunteers (we host two kids from NYC each summer), and we established a scholarship in my brothers' names at the local high school.

I hope you enjoy my articles. My goal is to bring some fun into your life.

Briefly me

My passion is ...

Writing humor, learning how to play the guitar.

I know too much about ...

Nothing. I don't think it's possible to know too much about anything (well...except another person's bowel movements). It would be much easier to say what I don't know much about, but there's hardly enough space here for that

My parents always told me ...

To eat everything on my plate, but I found many ways around that, including moving the peas to my pocket when they weren't looking and later dropping them in the backyard.

My childhood ambition ...

Was to be the guy who pumps gas (I think I didn't want to set the bar too high for myself), later it was to be a major league baseball player (I gave that one up when I turned 45).

My favorite memory ...

Playing high school sports, and later watching my sons play.

Why I write ...

I view writing humor as the highest calling for a writer. What's better than bringing joy to people?

What I am reading/watching/listening to ...

I enjoy a variety of spy/mystery writers. I enjoy watching The Amazing Race.

My first job ...

Was cleaning out chicken coops, for 35 cents an hour.

My best moment ...

Until my wife reads this, it was hearing that an article I had written was accepted by a national magazine.

My inspiration ...

My wife and kids. (There, honey, is that better?)

DUKE'S DIARY Hi there. My name is Duke. I don't know what I'm the Duke of, but I do know that I'm a four-year-old Labrador Retriever. To be more precise, a "Yellow Lab", for you dog aficionados. I live with my master, his wife Jan, and a small black cat named Sable. You didn't know dogs could write? Well, I've noticed that there's a lot about us that you humans don't know. With that in mind, I've decided to share with you the diary I've been keeping. I do this in the hope that by reading one dog's thoughts you might become better educated to our species' needs. Here we go; I've tried to du...
