I joined the army in 1986. My basic training was at Ft. Dix, New Jersey in the dead of winter. I enjoyed much of the boot camp atmosphere. I loved to sing the cadences. Physical training was rough, but I even liked that. My favorite activity was shooting the M-16, my worst favorite was the grenades, for which I'm about to tell you why.
Before we were able to throw a live CS grenade, we had to "qualify" by throwing one that was not live. I've never been good at throwing anything that resembles a ball, so I was a little worried about it. I stood around, nervously awaiting my turn.
