About me - Celia Givings

About me

I am one of the MANY aging 'baby boomers' who remember when the times, and life, seemed much simpler, kinder, and less fraught with stress and danger. Having never been one of those who had any well-defined goals when I was younger, my occupational career has followed mostly the 'jack of all trades' route. I worked predominantly as a nurse aide in my younger years and while my children were small, before going on to secretarial jobs, private security positions, medical scheduling......my 'career path' at any given time was dictated by the financial needs of my family and whatever posting was listed in the local help wanted ads that did not require anything more than a high school education, and I often worked as many as three jobs at a time while my children were small. The position I held the longest was that of a corrections officer at a local prison, where I remained for approximately seven and a half years, only staying until I had managed to save enough to put myself through nursing school without having to use financial aid or student loans. I am now a self-employed registered nurse who takes care of profoundly handicapped children and young adults, with occasional stints at local nursing homes in between my private cases.
It seems that my life has been a constant round of 'reinventing' myself with each new job or skill that I have had to learn along the way. The only constant throughout my life has been my love of writing. However, I have fulfilled this need predominantly by writing letters to friends, acquaintances, and loved ones. Since writing has always been the one thing I have always loved most, my dream now, at this stage of my life, is to be able to incorporate this love of mine into a new career path that will not only be fulfilling for me, but also possibly allow me to inform or help others along the way.

Briefly me

My passion is ...

spirituality/social causes

I know too much about ...

the needs of those less fortunate

My parents always told me ...

always leave a place a little better than you found it

My childhood ambition ...

to be a veterinarian!

My favorite memory ...

listening to the snow fall, and to water tumbling over a rocky waterfall, and my mother's laugh

Why I write ...

I love to communicate and connect with people

My first job ...

I worked as a nurse aide during and right after high school

My best moment ...

While caring for an elderly man, he jokingly said he would 'look me up' in heaven one day. I laughingly told him to just look for the 'fat one'...his response was, as he laid his hand on my arm, "No, I'll ask for the kind one and then I know I'll find you."

My inspiration ...

The many people I have taken care of thru the years, especially those who were so handicapped that others would say "what kind of life could they possibly have?"

Religion & Spirituality > Religion & Spirituality (Other) Experiencing divine intervention

A CAT NAMED DOUBTFUL. "Is there really any such thing as God?" The thought came to me unbidden, an UN-ordinary thought on a quite ordinary day. Not that I could say the prospect had never occurred to me before, but having been raised a 'good Catholic girl', my mind usually skittered away from it as soon as it appeared. It seemed somehow mildly sacrilegious to even permit the thought, let alone give it 'air time'. But this day was different...instead of dismissing the thought as soon as it appeared, my mind toyed with it.....rolled it around a bit....even (horrors!) enlarged upon it. Where ...
