If you're lucky enough to be in some group for some reason, listen to what people are talking about. You can later go up to someone and say: "Listen, I heard you talking about X. Could you tell me more about it?"

Get a hobby where you socialise and have an excuse for that. Like photography. Get a proper camera with changeable lenses, none of that cheap soap box look.
