At the ripe old age of nine, I decided to write a novel. I carried around a purple spiral notebook and a pink Hello Kitty pencil and wrote a couple of pages anytime I found a break in my daily action. I figured at the slow pace at which I was writing, I would probably not finish until after I turned 10 but that would be alright. Keep in mind, I had no idea how one would go about getting their work published or if the publisher would even bother reading a novel written in pencil, but that did not discourage me one bit. I just kept on writing. I was sure I would be the youngest person to ever publish a novel. I was certain my little novel would be huge. It would make me famous. I would travel all over signing books for adoring fans.
Fast forward many years later and my life could not be more different. I am a single mother who works full time but I still enjoy writing. Throughout my school years and into college I took courses that concentrated heavily on essay and paper writing. I always knew that I could count on top grades in these classes. Writing became a hobby for me. I love to pull out old journals I kept when I was a kid and read over those. I enjoyed writing on serious topics as well as hilarious experiences that have taken place in my life.
Now that I am older, I can see the value in writing (besides making me famous). I never realized just how much I knew until I started writing it all down. I never did get my little novel published and in fact, am not even sure where it is now. These days, most of my writing is done with a keyboard and appears on a computer screen, but I do still carry around a spiral notebook to write down thoughts when I can. Hey some habits are just hard to break.
