I have often read that one of the most important parts of a writer's training is reading, which is lucky for me as I devour books and one of my big ambitions is to own a house with a library where I can pass the entire day reading and writing.
I enjoy reading fiction and non-fiction and my favourite authors include Louis de Bernieres, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Ian McEwan, Amelie Nothomb, Marc Levy, Evelyn Waugh, Virginia Woolf, Jostein Gaarder, Umberto Eco, Dodie Smith, Harper Lee, Truman Capote, Neill Ferguson and Bill Bryson.
Although English is my first language, I also like reading novels and short stories in French, German and Spanish, both to practise my language skills and to experience a wider range of literature.
The non-fiction books I read are mostly in the fields of history and science.
My academic background is in physics; I have a degree in physics and a PhD in particle physics. During my studies I was lucky enough to be able to pursue both my interest in physics and my love of languages and travel and I have spent almost three years working and studying in France and Germany.
Currently, I'm working in an office job in London, UK, but my ambition to become a published writer is always constantly in my thoughts.
I enjoy writing for Helium because it gives budding writers the opportunity to hone their writing skills and develop their style in a supportive and inspiring environment.
Any comments or useful criticisms of my articles are most welcome!
