I'm a Brit (hence my "colourful" spelling) and I live in a traditional English village in the West Country with rolling green hills and a few sheep. I have 5 children, ranging from 22 to 1 year old and am a qualified secondary school teacher, specialising in Religious Studies. Having worked full-time for most of my life, I am currently at home devoting my time to my two littlest children (aged 2 and 1) but finding time to do a bit of part-time work and write for Helium, of course!

Many non-Muslims often express astonishment at the Islamic practice of polygamy. But the simple fact is that it is permitted in the Qur'an, which Muslims believe is the word of Allah revealed to and recorded by the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.). It is reasonable to comment then that the reason why Islam allows polygamy is that Allah allows it, and of course what Allah says, goes! But we can examine the practice and explore some potential reasons why it is seems good thing, at least in certain culture and at certain times.
