The words "military" and "service" were once interchangeable terms, synonyms that invoked the American spirit and embodied her grand ideals. This is no longer true. The US military's ongoing embroilment in Iraq is, in part, creating a rift between our military and our nation's time-honored tradition of personal service. This is deterring our youth from sincerely considering military service as a career option.
Previous generations enlisted in "The Service" or in the "The Military." There was no division between them. Some citizens still equate the concept of service to the United States...
