About me

Biography of Alexander C. Cullison, Ph.D.

Alex was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He is the son of a Chesapeake Bay pilot and comes from generations of sea captains. He grew up in the suburbs of Maryland. He had three older sisters.

During his secondary school years, he attended Annapolis High School and was a congressional page for a while, attending classes above the Library of Congress. Upon completion of high school he enlisted into the Air Force.

He subsequently went to private school and in 1975 became a Merchant Marine engineering officer. He sailed as a marine engineer for over three years.

In 1978, Alex started working for a nonprofit organization, a professional association that represented marine engineers and other professions. He worked representing and servicing association members for twenty years. During this time he was always attending night classes and taking college courses. First he received his BA degree from Antioch University. Then he got his BS degree from Excelsior College of NY. Later he obtained a Masters of Arts degree from the State University of New York at Empire. Lastly, in 1997, Alex became "Dr. Cullison" having received his Ph.D. from the Union Institute & University.

Dr. Cullison has been a self-employed mediator and arbitrator, practicing in Fairfax, VA for many years. Occasionally he serves as a substitute teacher for Fairfax County Public Schools. Presently he is an Adjunct Instructor at ITT-Tech, where he teaches non-technical courses commonly called the "humanities." He was recently recognized as the "Instructor of the Quarter." He is happily married and has two children. He enjoys education, politics, labor, and conflict resolution. When reflecting on his academic achievements, he believes that anything the mind can conceive and believe; it can achieve!
