About me - Stephanie Joynes

About me

I'm a new mom, and that's pretty much my identity right now.

Prior to motherhood, I grew up in a small town in Ohio. When I graduated from high school, I left Ohio and started studying English and Anthropology at Syracuse University with every intention of being a writer, but I ended up an anthropologist.

I floated around from various museums in various locations, and eventually started my Master's Degree in the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago. I finished my thesis, which focused on legal issues and Native Americans, and graduated in 2000.

I lived in Boston for a bit, but nothing really interesting happened there so I moved to Maryland and met my husband while working in a bookstore.

Since then I've worked at the Smithsonian Institution, got married, and had a baby. That's Sadie in that picture. She's humungous now.

I also sell Barefoot Books as a hobby. Just go over to my links and click on Barefoot Books and you'll be directed to my site.

And that's me. In a nutshell.

Briefly me

My passion is ...

anthropology. I study why people do what they do, and how the world changes because of it. Now that I have a baby girl, I'm fascinated by how she explores her world.

I know too much about ...

the stupid little trivial things, like the dot on top of an "i" is called a tittle.

My parents always told me ...

there are consequences for everything, whether it's good or bad.

My childhood ambition ...

was to travel.

My favorite memory ...

is every first day of school in Elementary School. I liked the smell of erasers and brand new art boxes.

Why I write ...

I write because my brain can't hold in everything, and my emotions often burst through the keyboard.

What I am reading/watching/listening to ...

I have a long commute, so I read anything I can get my hands on.

My first job ...

was working in a homemade ice cream shop in a small town in Ohio.

My best moment ...

was when my baby girl was born.

My inspiration ...

is everyone. I'm always watching, listening, and reading people. And they amaze me every day.
