On January 28, 2007, Charles Andersen had a quarrel with his wife, Tracy Andersen over her housekeeping, resulting in Tracy leaving the Andersen home with her two children and spending the night at a local motel. Tracy returned home the next morning and asked Charles if he wanted her back. When Charles informed Tracy he was not ready for her to come back home she attacked him with a knife. During the struggle the knife was thrown aside and Tracy proceeded to tear the tee shirt Charles was wearing off his body.
