S.L. Ewell was born in Texas, yet spent holidays with her family in Arkansas, where she now lives. After college, she was the manager of a small children's toy store, a computer technician and in 1998 opened a computer sales and service business. As an aspiring freelance journalist, Stephanie has written poetry, how-to's, and articles all through the eyes of a woman, mother, friend, lover and professional business owner. She is currently working on a novel.
Becoming a writer
All my life I've preferred reading to anything else. As a child, I wrote short stories and poetry. Then as a young adult, life took me on another path but the dream of writing has always stayed inside me.
Through the years of balancing children and a career, I had to continue to put that dream on hold, but thanks to a few twists in the road of life, I now have the opportunity to write full time. Starting out I tried to ignore the nagging voice inside that told me I didn't stand a chance, I had dreamed of being a writer all my life - but I thought that an ordinary woman from an ordinary family in an ordinary place like Arkansas couldn't ever be a writer. Surely you had to come from a family of writers and live somewhere like London or New York?
I have learned that I am not ordinary, nor is my family and neither is Arkansas. No one is ordinary. I find inspiration for writing in the world right outside my window as much as in the world beyond. It can be found in the eyes of my children, in the hearts of my friends and throughout my community. All I had to do was open my heart, eyes and mind.
