Now that my children were growing more independent and in school full time, I found that the spare time I so craved years ago when I was changing diapers 24/7 and had a kid wrapped around my leg, was finally here! I didn't have any trouble filling in the newly found time with interests and hobbies that I had either wanted to try or had to put on hold.
With all of the limitless writing opportunities that are offered these days, I can write to my hearts desire about topics I am passionate about or step out onto a limb and take a stab at new material. I only feel more empowered than I did ten years ago when my writing faded because now I have years of living experience to contribute to new stories and articles.
I have written a children's book and my goal is to get it published one day. I illustrated it using water colors and this was a big "out of the box" experience for me, but well worth it. This medium of art was perfect for me because water color pictures do not need to have sharp, defined edges; they can bleed into one another and give the illustration an even more interesting outcome. Coupling this with writing a book came naturally to me and gave me great joy. The original idea of enrolling in these classes was to stay in touch with the outside world while I was home playing Thomas Trains all day with my son.
Poetry is another avenue of writing that I enjoy and this expression of writing has been passed down in my family starting with my great-grandfather (who created a wonderful collection), to my grandmother than to me.
The poetry ideas come to me so fast that I literally have found myself writing poem ideas/words down on a napkin in a restaurant before I forget it. This happens often, so I keep a pen and paper with me at all times just in case.
I have two published poems and one pending placement in a contest at the present time. This form of writing is wonderful for releasing emotions that one may not have been aware of until the words are read back after recorded on paper.
So I guess one could assume, strongly, that I am right-brained, proud of it and if you asked me to hook up the DVD player to the television, I could write instructions on how to do it, but could not carry out this technical task; that is for left-brained people. Hmm, maybe this is a good topic for my next article.

I've encountered people who have remained content with their life thus far. The grass in their yard was the same color green as the grass in their next door neighbor's yard. I'd view them as complacent and rarely taking chances, always maintaining their lawn by simply adding water to it here and there. Well, I noticed my grass, over time, resembled that of a hay patch. I found myself complaining incessantly about all of the things that I loathed about where we lived and the more I recognized what other places had to offer, the "blemishes" of our area just seemed to magnify. It lead me t...
