In the past, wrote several guest columns for local paper (Hendersonville Star News)and a few for Nashville Tennessean. When I spoke to the then-editor of Star News about a weekly or semi-weekly opinion column, he was very complimentary, but said budget wouldn't allow. He did however, ask me to continue offering FREE contributions.
Since I can't buy much for free, I declined.
I did send samples of published guest columns dealing with different subjects to several weekly and semi-weekly newspapers in Tennessee. My hope was that I could more or less suyndicate myself with several clients for small fees. Several wrote back, telling me they liked what they saw, but their papers were on such tight budgets, they couldn't afford a five or ten dollar column. A couple offered to publish if I were interested in submitting for free in return for exposure. (wasn't that big of them?) No, thanks!
