About me - Sherry H. Bowen

About me

While in college, I decided to go for a double major.  I received my bachelor's degrees in Middle Childhood Education and Library Science.  Having a strong interest in books and writing, I finished my master's in Library Science at Georgia State University in Atlanta while I was teaching in the classroom.

While teaching and working in the library, I wrote – fiction and nonfiction.  I'm proud to say that I have three children's picture books published by Richard C. Owen Publishers and a story printed in Humpty Dumpty Magazine.  I'm still writing children's books and enjoy going to schools for author talks.

While writing creatively, I also wrote nonfiction parenting and educational articles for various magazines. Some of them can be found here: EduGuide. (Parenting and educational articles). I am now writing juvenile nonfiction articles for Appleseeds Magazine.

Unfortunately, about 13 years ago, by body started going numb. I had trouble walking and things only got worse. Nobody could find out what was wrong, but I had to stop writing and focus on working and my family.  Writing was extra and I couldn't continue it. Then about 10 years ago the doctors found spots in my brain. They were lesions.  I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. It's taken awhile to get the medicine and my symptoms straight, but now I'm back to writing and I have Helium to thank for the spark that got me going again.

Helium has offered me a whole new place to expand and improve my writing. I love writing educational, health, and history articles and I'm exploring many other areas.

Briefly me

My passion is ...

reading, writing, my family, and needlework (not in that order)

I know too much about ...

I can never know too much. If I learn a little each day, I never grow old.

My parents always told me ...

I can do what I want if I worked at it.

My childhood ambition ...

was to be a teacher and librarian. I did it until I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

My favorite memory ...

my dad swimming out to get me as the raft I was on floated out to sea.

Why I write ...

I write for children and adults. By writing for children, I want to get them interested in reading and using their imagination. When I write for adults, I want to give them information.

What I am reading/watching/listening to ...

a little bit of everything.

My first job ...

working for a bank. It really makes you think about how much money you don't have.

My best moment ...

There are lots of them - I can't pick just one.

My inspiration ...

my family
