I am a 48 year old freelance writer coming up for air after publishing my first and only book. The three year process taught me the value of patience, endurance, and reslience. After a brief hiatus from Helium, I am ready to resume my small contribution to this wonderful information portal.
Writing has always played a prominent role in my life. My first literary work was a hastily written piece that wished my grandfather well after he incurred a sudden illness. From there, I climbed the written word ladder and found my natural proclivity for writing to far exceed my verbal acumen. I won debates with my pen, not my tongue.
College was a fertile writing ground that provided me with a strong foundation for future literary growth. My college roommate was also the school newspaper's editor. Meeting a deadline meant walking down a dank apartment hallway with a 750 word commentary in hand.
I lost a bit of the writing bug after I dove into the restaurant industry. Twenty-five years later, and a number of published articles and commentary, I took the fork in the road that led to a concerted effort to improve my writing skills. Helium provides the best support and learning platform of any writing site on the Internet. Serendipity is how I found Helium.
The published articles and commentary have run the gamut of topical interests. While I made a living in the restaurant industry, my passion lies in the wasteland we call American politics. The wasteland is perpetuated by the mainstream media, an entity that runs stories about American Idol and high heels instead of providing relveant content concerning the day's events.
Alternate news sites have risen from the mainstream media's antiquated ashes. My goal is to create a Website that integrates the brillance of alternate news sites with my unique perspective on the events that truly shape the American landscape.

The United States economy was built on the backs of children for the first 150 years of its existence. Children were expected to work after the Civil War so the country could rebuild its war torn infrastructure. Companies exploited child labor and the government was behind in developing laws to protect the rights of children.
The abolition of child labor took root in 1904. But it took almost for...
