About me - Mary Blevins

About me

I'm a freelance photographer and writer, living in middle-America. After working as a photographer for years, I returned to college in 2001 to continue working on my bachelor's degree. While photography remains my true passion, I've also discovered a love of writing which began when I joined the staff of the campus paper as a staff writer and then later as the editor. There's a greater measure of creative control in writing and you're not restricted by outside influences the way you can sometimes be with photography.

My husband has been active duty Air Force for 18 years and we both feel a responsibility to participate with, and give back to the military community. I've been a volunteer with the Key Spouse program for 11 years. I was also a board member with the Enlisted Spouses Club at Andrews AFB as well as public relations officer. I wrote a monthly column for the base publication and designed and conducted briefings on various topics relevant to military spouses, like disaster preparedness in a major metropolitan area.

As a mother to two teenage girls I feel a huge responsibility to educate the teenage community. I volunteered at RealSexEdFacts.com for three years as a columnist, and later answering questions written by young readers.

Over the past five years I've worked for several private venues creating course content, I freelanced for a web development corporation in Texas creating and editing course content for all of their contract domains and I supplied content to various national blogs. I've also worked with a local campus paper in the past few months on upgrading content and modernizing their systems and recently I was approached by Arcadia Publishing about writing a book.

Briefly me

My passion is ...

Photography, writing, shoes.

I know too much about ...

celebrities...I'm ashamed to admit this.

My childhood ambition ...

to be an artist...and I am. In addition to writing and photography I"ve worked consistently for 5 years as an altered artist.

My favorite memory ...

any memory of my daughters

Why I write ...

I think writing is like dancing with words. Well written prose can have a very lyrical quality...and I'm addicted to my thesaurus

What I am reading/watching/listening to ...

I like creative television wherein you get to watch someone be creative and produce something. Musically, I'm very much an elitist. If it's the least bit trendy I generally hate it. I prefer classics from the 20's and 30's specifically anything from the jazz family or French artists.

My first job ...

fast food....it's an American tradition.

My best moment ...

I'd like to think it's still to come

My inspiration ...

other artists, writers, photographers, poets. When you see and hear the amazing work created by others, you're instantly inspired to create yourself...and to strive to surpass what's been done before.

For 20 years we've witnessed the degradation of Hollywood society wherein the rules, which dictated they lead us all by example, have fallen way to hedonism and overindulgence. The reality is simply that we don't actually care about any of the celebrities, but we do want the pleasure of looking into their world. For a few minutes we get to marvel at the million dollar homes in exotic locations or admire their ability to jet off to Euro...
