A treeless yard is, indeed, a featureless yard. Whether you select trees or shrubs or hedges consider your environment and your climate. Trees grow best in their natural environment. Many trees, not suited to climatic conditions in your area will suffer.
Living in a northern prairie setting our native trees are the willows, the birch and the evergreen trees. Fruit trees may subsist but will not flourish. Yes, there are some fruit trees which are native to our area and survive well but tropical trees would die with the first winter-kill.
