About me - Joilene Rasmussen

About me

Freedom is at the core of everything I do, and I believe people were not created to conform to anything but Christ's image.

My husband, Scott, is 19 years my senior, and we work together in sheet metal construction, with our children, Cody (6), and Tyra Marie (2). We live in a town of 350 to 400 people, and heat and cook with wood. I could have been a pioneer's wife, and enjoy skills that promote self-sufficiency. We could make a lot more money elsewhere, but refuse to trade the liberty of going where we want, when we want (we do not answer to an employer). We live on the South Platte River, which is ideal hunting ground, and this is worth more than ritz to me. Those of us in this community who get up to the poverty line consider ourselves fortunate.

I am a fourth-generation farmer's daughter, and continue to live among one of the most bull-headed populations on earth, but I enjoy the challenge of teaching in a youth group, pouring myself into those pulled by liquor, pre-marital sex, and drugs of many forms.

My husband and I are in the process of establishing a breeding and training kennel for German Shepherd dogs. Our stud, K-10, is a fun-loving animal who nonetheless takes his jobs as protector and hunting companion seriously.

My priorities are simple - 1) my God and family, 2) writing, 3) other things.

Briefly me

My passion is ...

Training my children to be people of integrity.

I know too much about ...

WWII era grain bins.

My parents always told me ...

"Pray about it."

My childhood ambition ...

To own and work a traditional, New England style farm.

My favorite memory ...

How to choose? All exceptional memories involve my family - overhauling engines with my brother, reading novels aloud with my sisters and mother, hunting geese with my husband.

Why I write ...

Because I can't quit. I dictated my first written story to my mom when I was three (about combat between a flying lion and a winged unicorn).

What I am reading/watching/listening to ...

Hid tanning info; Traditional Celtic fiddle music.

My first job ...

Jack-of-all-trades construction with my dad.

My best moment ...

When I realized I really had married the love of my life.

My inspiration ...

Is anything too hard for the Lord?

Garden School: Growing My Children's Souls My three-year-old, Cody, comes running across our yard with a squashed fistful of bindweed blooms, wild sunflowers, and purple bells with roots attached. "Mama, a vase!" he says, and through my laughter, my second child, yet in my womb, kicks hard. Is this one a girl, or will I have two boys to teach? To teach. The words send thrills through my soul, giving me glimpses of the future, of these children grown to be responsible, godly adults, of my being a grandmother and, God willing, seeing my great-grandchildren at my knee. They give me visions of...
